How Stress May Affect Your Smile

How Stress May Affect Your Smile

June 16, 2025 By Dental Arts of South Jersey

How Stress May Affect Your Smile

When most people think about their stress levels, they don't consider its effect on their oral health. However, research has shown a direct correlation between oral health, stress, and anxiety. Stress elevates inflammation in your body, which is directly linked to oral health problems and diseases, such as periodontal disease.

The following may help explain the correlation between stress and oral health.

 Teeth Grinding

Also known as bruxism, clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth can cause substantial damage to your teeth and jaw. Typically, this occurs during sleep, but it can happen at any time of day. If you wake up with sensitive teeth or a sore jaw, it can be due to bruxism. Symptoms include:

  • Cracked teeth
  • Eroded tooth enamel
  • Facial pain or soreness
  • Jaw pain
  • Headaches
  • Temporomandibular disorder (TMD)
  • Worn teeth

Any or all of the above can indicate the need for a dental appointment.

 Inflammation and Gum Disease

If you suffer from chronic stress, you may have developed a compromised immune system, making it more difficult to fight infection. This also means you are at higher risk for periodontal disease, which is characterized by inflammation and has the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Lost or loose teeth
  • Swollen gums

Stress can increase your body's inflammatory response, which will exacerbate any existing gum inflammation.

 Dry Mouth

Saliva is essential for good overall health and good oral health. A lack of saliva is called dry mouth and can be the result of certain medications or some habits like mouth breathing. When your mouth lacks sufficient saliva, it encourages the growth of bacteria, bad breath, and tooth decay.

How to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Many people consider their oral hygiene regimen to be at the bottom of their priority list. This, however, can lead to poor oral hygiene and a myriad of physical and oral health issues. You can experience a buildup of plaque, cavities, decay, and several stages of periodontal disease.

To avoid poor oral health and the resulting diseases, it’s best to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Avoid sugary foods and snacks
  • Avoid the "just once" trap
  • Brush at least twice daily, floss at least daily
  • Eat a well-balanced diet
  • Maintain your body's hydration
  • Schedule at least annual dental exams and cleanings
  • Use a nightguard if you have bruxism

If you have any of the above symptoms, call Dental Arts of South Jersey at (856) 324-3361 to schedule an appointment. We can help you maintain your beautiful smile and your good oral health!
